Guess who’s back

I’m back from an exhausting but unbelievably fun week of veld school. I’ve been camping, hunting, abseiling and hiking. So much that I haven’t found the time yet to put it all in one story, so I’ll start off with the general idea of veld school.

The veld school I went to was a farm owned by Jan-Koos - a former maths teacher from Windhoek. He has been having veld schools on his farm for over 14 years now. So what’s the idea of veld school? Well in veld school the children learn to find there way. They learn how to debate, how to take responsibility for their actions and how to live independent. This is all enforced by an adventure that simulates their emotions.

Their emotions are going up & down now rapidly because of puberty, so that’s exactly what veld school tries to simulate by giving them an easy day followed by a very heavy one.

The program looked like this:

Fr. Camping outside & braaiing
Sa. 18km Hike + climbing a mountain
Su. Swimming + visiting an old german p.o.w. camp
Mo. Dropping + climbing mountain
Tu. Classes
We. Obstacle course + abseiling

My work in this all was to help leading and educating the kids, quite exciting. In a week I’ve become a dessert survival and abseiling instructor!

More on this week I’ll write shortly, for now I would just like to say:

I’M VERY EXCITED FOR LOURENS AND RUTH - our downstairs neighbours - WITH THE BIRTH OF THEIR LOVELY BABY GIRL THIS MORNING!

Cheers, Hidde
